The heartiest of the oat varieties - steel-cut oats are often referred to as course oatmeal. These groats have the inner kernel with the inedible hull removed and have then been chopped into two or three pieces. These steel cut oats can be cooked into a porridge or oat cakes. They take the longest to cook - typically between 16-32 minutes for porridge. They are nuttier and chewier than the other types of oats and delicious with raisins - cinnamon and almonds added or cooked in.
